Joseph A. Bernard was the 16th Lieutenant Governor of the Island, a position he held from 1945 to 1950. He also has the distinction of being the first Acadian to hold this prestigious position in a Canadian province.

A businessman, he owned a big general store in Tignish. Before becoming Lieutenant Governor, he served in the Island Legislative Assembly for two years.

He was a grandson of Stanislas F. Perry, the first Island Acadian to be elected to the provincial legislature and the House of Commons.
