ACADIAN QUIZ OF PEI - ANSWER 1


1) One of the Acadian pioneers of Prince Edward Island was Michel Haché dit Gallant. He settled in Port-la-Joye in 1720. How did he die in 1737? a) Natural death;  b) Drowning;  c) He was murdered.

Answer: Drowning

Michel Haché dit Gallant, a resident of Port-la-Joye, drowned on April 10, 1737, while walking on the ice at the mouth of the North River. His body was not found until the following July 17. He was about 75 years old.

In 1690, he had married Anne Cormier at Beaubassin (near Amherst, N.S.) where their 12 children were born, 7 boys and 5 girls. Michel Haché, who was also known as Michel Gallant, is recognized as one of the first Acadians to settle on the Island. Today, his DNA is found in a good portion of the population of Prince Edward Island.
