Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival to host Provincial 4-H Dairy Calf Competition

In addition to regular judging and competitions

ABRAM-VILLAGE - July 18, 2019 - The Evangeline Area Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival will have the honor of hosting the Provincial 4-H Dairy Calf Competition Saturday, Aug. 31, starting at 9 a.m. in Abram-Village.

Exhibition and Festival president Jeanne Gallant explains that this competition is "extremely important" since the winning calves will qualify for the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario.

"The Prince Edward Island 4-H Clubs usually hold their provincial Rural Youth Fair in September to select, among other things, winners in the beef and dairy calf categories for the Royal Fair," Gallant explains. "But this year, the 4-H Clubs decided to integrate their provincial livestock competitions into existing agricultural fairs, such as ours. We are therefore privileged to have been asked to play an important role in the dairy calf selection process. We certainly hope that youth from our own region will rank among the best exhibitors in this class. »

During the PEI Provincial Holstein Show, sponsored by ADL, professional judges will first of all select dairy calf winners in the regular 4-H competition and then they’ll pick the eight 4-H provincial dairy calf champions that will go on to the Royal.

Then, starting at 1 p.m., the Exhibition will host the Illsley’s Holstein Futurity Show.

The 4-H poultry and turkey showmanship competition, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m., also promises to be interesting again this year.

The weekend Exhibition also includes the judging of a large number of other classes and categories and features several contests and competitions.

On Friday, grains, roots, vegetables, fruits, flowers, arts, handicrafts, domestic sciences, poultry and miniature horse classes will be judged. In the afternoon, the 4-H handcraft projects will be judged.

On Saturday, draft horses, rabbits, pre 4-H Holstein classes and 4-H rabbits will be judged. Sunday will feature the judging of light horses, ponies and beef classes.

The petting farm will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And of course, as always, the famous "Cow Bingo" will be held Sunday late afternoon.

The Founders’ Hall and Artisans' Hall will be opened on Friday at 2 p.m., on Saturday at 10 a.m. and on Sunday at 11 a.m. Culinary demonstrations are scheduled for Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. and craft demonstrations Sunday afternoon starting at 2:30 p.m.

A workshop featuring Lego blocks, called “Bricks 4 Kidz PEI”, will be open to children Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Preschoolers will be admitted to the grounds free of charge all weekend long; on Friday and Saturday, all school-aged children will be admitted free.
