Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival to host Holstein judges’ school

ABRAM-VILLAGE – Aug. 14, 2018 – In addition to holding its regular judging and competitions, the Evangeline Area Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival will have the honor this year of hosting a “judging school” for cattle enthusiasts learning how to judge Holstein dairy cattle.

This Atlantic region “school” alternates annually from province to province. This is the first time that the Evangeline Exhibition has been asked to host the school. An Atlantic committee that supervises the school has invited 50 to 60 people to participate. Gilles Bernard, a local farmer from St. Phillippe who is already an official judge, will actively participate in the school.

Judging of livestock will take place Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 on the Exhibition grounds in Abram-Village. It kicks off Friday morning with the judging of 4-H projects, poultry and miniature horses. The exhibition continues in the afternoon with a 4-H parade of turkeys, a continuation of the miniature horse show and the judging of 4-H dairy classes.

Saturday morning begins with the draft horse show, which continues into the afternoon. The PEI Provincial Holstein Show, sponsored by ADL, then takes place at 9:30 a.m.; judges from the school will be putting their newfound knowledge to the test. The petting farm will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the afternoon, the pre-4-H Holsteins will be judged, and the Exhibition will hold the “Illsley’s Holstein Futurity Show”. The day wraps up with the judging of 4-H rabbits.

The light horse and pony show will be hosted Sunday morning. In the afternoon, beef classes will be judged. And of course, as always, the famous Cow Patty Bingo will be staged late in the afternoon.

A vast number of other categories will also be judged throughout the weekend. These include everything from handcrafts and artwork to preserves and food products (domestic sciences), along with all kinds of agricultural products (vegetables, fruits, flowers and grains).
